Situation

Courfaivre (former German name : Corfouver) is a locality and former Swiss commune in the Canton of Jura.
Courfaivre lies 6 km as the crow flies southwest of Delémont. The village is watered by the river Sorne, at 459 meters altitude.
The former communal territory extended from the Bois-des-Chaux hill in the north, at 589 meters altitude, to Le Mont, at 1 026 meters altitude, on the Vellerat range, to the south of the locality.


A little history
At the place known as Courtes Méchielles, graves dating back to Merovingian times have been found. The first written mention of the site dates back to 1147, under the name Curfavro. Like the other free villages of the seigniory of Delémont, Courfaivre returned to the Bishopric of Basel in 1271.From 1793 to 1815, Courfaivre belonged to France, in the department of Mont-Terrible, then in that of Haut-Rhin. Following a decision by the Congress of Vienna in 1815, the commune was assigned to the canton of Bern, like all those in the Delémont district.Since January 1, 1979, Courfaivre has been part of the canton of Jura. Since January 1er 2013, the commune has merged with those of  Bassecourt, Glovelier, Soulce and Undervelier to form the new commune of Haute-Sorne.
