GEOGRAPHICAL SITUATION
The Commune of Basse-Allaine is located in the Canton of Jura, District of Porrentruy (Switzerland). It comprises 3 villages (Buix, Courtemaîche and Montignez) and 2 hamlets (Grandgourt and Le Maira). The communal administration is centralized in Courtemaîche.

L'ALLAINE
The Allaine river (29.3 km) crosses the plains where Courtemaîche, Buix and Grandgourt are built. In times of heavy rain or snowmelt, it floods the meadows and feeds the water table that supplies the region's drinking water. It rises in the foothills of the Ordons mountain range and flows into the Allan (a tributary of the Doubs) near Morvillard in France. It gives its name to the commune of Basse-Allaine.

AGRICULTURE AND SYLVICULTURE
Basse-Allaine is surrounded by meadows, arable fields, pastures and numerous forests of varied species (beech, hornbeam, oak, maple, cherry, spruce, fir, larch, etc.). Some thirty farms raise cattle and grow crops (wheat, barley, rye, tobacco, rapeseed, corn, beet, potatoes). The hills range in altitude from 400 to 600 meters. Numerous small valleys, bordered by limestone cliffs, climb towards the Bure and Montignez plateaus.
